According to mythology, Ravana was killed on Dashami after a fierce battle and Sri Rama conquered Lanka, hence this day is celebrated as Vijayadashami or Dussehra. At the same time, Maa Durga fought a fierce battle with Mahishasura for 10 days and killed her on Ashwin Shukla Dashami. Because of this also, that day was celebrated as Vijayadashami.
